Our New Home

Buying your first house is a moment you dream of. You have a certain idea as to what it will look and feel like. I always imagined I would move into a brand new house, the decorators will have already completed their work and the movers will have placed your belongings perfectly in your wardrobe. Well... It doesn't happen like that :) The whole process of buying a house was horrific ,to be completely honest, but what we have now is truly very special. I will talk in more detail about the process in other posts but for the moment here is a quick overview.

Where did we buy?

So after years of thinking I would buy a sparkly new house I realised that location was the most important things to me above anything else. I wanted to have a house that was walking distance to town and had to be close to my family too. That narrowed the search and soon I realised there weren't any new builds in the locations I wanted and if there were I certainly couldn't afford them. This meant buying something old and giving it some love and attention. I am skipping a big chunk of the story but we bought a very old house in Drumcondra. We moved in before we had any of the work done (Our biggest mistake!).

What did you have to do to the house?

As it's an old house we had lots to do to make the house look and feel like our own. There was so much pine in the house when we first moved in that I thought I was on a ranch in the mid-west. Slowly but surely we got the place looking more like our home.

Here a little snippet of the work we did :

  • Insulated the house

  • Plastered every wall (the filthiest job!)

  • Rewired most of the electrics

  • New Bathroom

  • Resprayed the kitchen

  • New floors

  • New furniture

  • Installed spot lighting

  • New carpets

  • New ceilings

Now from the list above you would think we spent a fortune but we didn't. I will share the detail on how we saved on cost in a post very soon but first I wanted to share some before and afters.
